Study Abroad 2014- Leila Jawad

Leila Jawad is a senior sociology student and will serve as head AVP of pledge development this fall. Leila went on the UF in Dominican Republic program for 6 weeks this summer.

She took two courses: Service Learning and Dominican Culture and History. For Service Learning, she volunteered about nine hours per week at a local clinic where she learned the daily operations of a medical center, how to do sutures, administer injections, perform Pap smears and give patient care.

The clinic was in an extremely poor “barrio” which sometimes required them to make house calls.

“House calls were one of my favorite parts because we got to see how our patients lived, though it was very sad,” she said.

For her Dominican Culture and History class, she stayed with a host family who only spoke Spanish.  She said it was one of the most challenging yet most rewarding parts of her trip because her Spanish improved so quickly.

We are so proud of the work Leila did in the Dominican Republic this summer!

Summer Interns 2014 - Stephen Bolden

As a professional development fraternity, our brothers are always looking for ways to build upon their professional experiences and prepare for the working world ahead of them. Many of our brothers are currently participating in internships across the country with various different companies.

One of these brothers is Stephen Bolden, PC Fall 2012 and our next Alpha Phi Warden. We got the chance to find out a little bit about what he is doing as an intern at P&G in Charlotte.

Stephen began his internship with Procter & Gamble on May 19th in Charlotte, NC. He is working in P&G's Customer Business Development (CBD) function. "The CBD function is such an exciting business within P&G, and I love being a part of it. My job is very multifaceted, and each day I learn something new, whether it be about marketing, advertising, or sales," Stephen said.

Throughout the summer he will be working on a diverse array of projects with world-renowned, billion dollar brands, such as Tide, Old Spice, Crest, and Pampers. So far he is thoroughly enjoying the experience and loves working in a fast-paced environment with intelligent people.

We look forward to hearing more about all Stephen accomplishes in the next few months and his experiences in Charlotte as well!

Keep checking back to see what some of our other brothers are doing this summer, both here and abroad.

Pledging Alpha Kappa Psi Changes Your College Experience

The only way to understand how much pledging can influence your college experience is to pledge. The Alpha Kappa Psi chapter at the University of Florida strives to shape pledges into professional brothers who will positively influence the business world. The process aims to improve interviewing and public speaking skills, and to make networking connections that will continue into future careers. This semester we have compiled quotes from current pledges describing the pledging process and how the process has affected them personally.

"My favorite part of pledging so far has been having the incredible opportunity to make bonds that will last for a lifetime."- William Wu

"I think that I have most improved on my confidence and public speaking."- Sabreena Davidson

"My favorite part of pledging has been meeting so many new, ambitious and diverse group[s] of people. I have loved watching how our pledge class has grown and the family we have created."- Justine Gordon

"I've learned so much through the pledging process. Alpha Kappa Psi has prepared me for such a wide variety of professional experiences that I am confident in my ability to surpass any competition for future interviews and endeavors."- Kelsie Ozanne
